Machine Guarding Awareness

Every guard on a machine is there because someone, at some point, figured out exactly how that machine could catch, crush, cut, or pull in a body part — and built a barrier to stop it. A guard that's been removed "temporarily" and never put back is one of the most common findings in an OSHA inspection, and one of the easiest to prevent.
The point of operation — where the machine actually does its work, like a blade, die, or nip point — is almost always the most dangerous part of any piece of equipment. That's exactly where most guards are designed to go.

- Never operate equipment with a guard removed, propped open, or bypassed — even to "just check something quickly."
- If a guard is missing, damaged, or doesn't fit right, stop using that equipment and report it immediately.
- Interlocked guards (ones that stop the machine when opened) should never be defeated or wedged.
- Watch for jewelry, loose clothing, or long hair near moving parts — guards protect against contact, not against being pulled in.
- If a job seems to require removing a guard to get the work done, that's a sign the process needs to be redesigned — not a reason to work unguarded.
